Have you been invited inside for a formal interview with a top tech brand? Don’t rest on your laurels just yet. You’ve clearly made a mark in a former role, but this company won’t hire you on reputation alone. You need to prove you have everything they’re looking for.

Prove your niche knowledge
Added value. That’s what any company wants to see when hiring a new team member. If you’ve got any skills in sub-sectors of emerging or critical tech, be sure to talk about them in the one-to-one. Knowledge of DevOps, data engineering or digital transformation, for example, can really set you apart from other candidates.
Don’t forget to be vocal about any personal and/or passion projects too – like hackathons or website and app builds. It shows you love what you do and enjoy learning independently.
Bring out the buzzwords
By the time you meet your potential new employer, they may have spent hours, days or even weeks scanning applications and conducting interviews. They’re tired of the general rhetoric; they want to hear something fresh and relevant.
That’s why it’s so advantageous to assemble a list of strong industry buzzwords and reel these off during the interview. Immersive tech, robotic process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), mobile first and microservices are all hot topics right now – so it’s worth familiarising yourself with (or gathering the latest insight on) these as best you can.
Show yourself off
It’s important to be a passionate version of your best self during any meetings you have throughout the recruitment phase.
Great employers will care about preserving their company culture, so don’t forget to talk openly about your hobbies and interests. These are key indicators for your personality and will give the interviewer a good understanding of whether you’d fit well in their team.
Tell them your ambitions
It’s always good to tell your interviewer how happy you are to be there. But it’s also a smart move to share your vision for the business and what you want to achieve whilst you’re there.
The top tech companies want to scale teams, bringing on board people who will keep pace and shape this development. That’s why it’s so valuable to offer contributions before you’ve even been hired.
